Why KMDIA was formed
The Kerala Medical Device Industry Association was formed to give Kerala’s medical device industry a focused and representative platform of its own.
Medical devices move through a demanding lifecycle, from identifying a clinical need and designing a solution to prototyping, evaluation, regulatory review, quality-controlled manufacturing, adoption and post-market responsibility. Progress depends on many capabilities working together.
Kerala already has important ingredients: established manufacturers, research and clinical institutions, technical talent, startup activity and policy recognition. Yet individual organisations face common challenges involving regulation, testing, specialist skills, shared infrastructure, procurement, funding awareness and access to markets. KMDIA’s role is to convert those shared needs into structured dialogue, practical learning, institutional connections and coordinated industry action.

Kerala’s opportunity
Invest Kerala reports that Kerala contributes 15 per cent to India’s medical device industry and describes an ecosystem of 85 medical device companies with annual revenue above ₹9,000 crore. The Kerala Industrial Policy 2023 identifies medical equipment as a priority sector, while connected strengths in biotechnology, electronics, engineering research and high value-added rubber support a broader manufacturing ecosystem.
That foundation is reinforced by institutions such as SCTIMST, whose work spans device design, prototyping, evaluation, technology transfer and industry support, and by initiatives intended to strengthen shared research, testing and manufacturing infrastructure.
